Martha Stephenson

November 28, 1928 — April 17, 2012

Martha Lorene Stephenson November 28, 1928 – April 17, 2012 Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Stephenson, wife of Claude Stephenson, will be Friday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Karnes & Son Funeral Home of Dyer. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:30 – 8 p.m. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery of Dyer. She passed away at the Dyer Nursing Home on April 17, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She showed great strength and hope during these years, always relying on her faith to see her through. She was born on November 28, 1928, daughter of the late Will and Lura Hickman Workman. She is survived by her three children; Judy (Billy) Barron, Ronnie (Cathy) Stephenson, and Richard (Nancy) Stephenson; grandchildren, Kelly (Scott) Greathouse, Josh (Miranda) Stephenson, Amy Wiese, Julie (Michael) Landrum, Wesley Stephenson, Peggy Jones, Laura Stephenson, and Phillip Stephenson; two step-grandchildren, Heather McCollum, Mark Fairless, III; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; also a sister, Dorthula Simpson and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters; Lillian Sims, Mamie Barton, Kate Terrell, and Willie Ruth Patterson, and brothers, Edward Workman, James Workman, and Charles Workman. Martha was a caring, loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and aunt. She attended and graduated from Rutherford High School and retired after 32 years at Kellwood Company. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She loved to go camping at Land Between the Lakes where she and Claude would meet many of their friends. Her main joy in life was her family, always looking forward to having them over for special meals and visits. She was very disappointed last Christmas when she was not able to have them for that big Christmas diner gathering of her family. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Karnes & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Martha Stephenson.
